I’m hoping to find the earliest serial number possible of a Martin featuring these Kluson tuners with the ultra thin pancake-like riveted cog wheels. The reason for this is to learn if the tuners were marketed before April They were patented in but the application for this was filed on April 10, Around that time the tuners should have shown up at the market and shipped out to the manufacturers.

The same question is for patent law experts, if this was possible or legal at all in or had the application to be filed before the product was marketed? Unfortunately there are no Kluson records left over or known from this period which would give a more precise answer.

The only force powerful enough to stop their progress was the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, According to history, all makers dropped what they were doing to join the war time effort. Epiphone had suspended their guitar production to make aileron parts for aircraft. However, the company emerged from the war with a different face…the man whose name was on every musical instrument had died during the war. When the war ended in Epiphone renewed its battle with Gibson, however Gibson never resumed making upright basses and Epiphone again held strong with its upright bass making prowess.

The Epiphone catalog showed this line up of basses with a notion that many items were not yet back into production after WWII.

Below is a picture of these “Gibson Deluxe” style Kluson tuners with double ring Tulip buttons. s Kluson Tuner Buttons. It is very common for the Keystone style plastic tuner buttons used on Kluson tuners from to to brown and shrink and crumble.

Contact the vintage guitar info guy. Kluson tuners were used by a number of vintage guitar manufacturers from the s to the late s. Here is a pictorial of how to identify the general years of these tuners. This info will apply to any type of closed-back Kluson Deluxe tuner, regardless of the style of tip metal, button plastic, keystone plastic, etc.

It also applies to “3 on a plate” style tuners too as used on Gibson J and other models. On the back side of the tuner’s main plate there are patent number of “Patent Appld” stampings, depending on the year of the tuner. This info is not covered here because the numbers vary depending on the exact style of Kluson tuner. All the info below applies to all styles of to Kluson Deluxe closed-back tuners, as used on Fender and Gibson guitars of the time. All pictures by TWitrock thanks Tom!

Note the vertical “Kluson Deluxe” stamp down the center of the gear cover. But more importantly, notice the lack of a second tuner post hole on the opposite side of the gear cover blue arrow. Notice the bottom of the gear cover has an external “PAT. On the bottom side of the tuners stamped into the metal it says ” PAT. Often these tuners are often mis-identified as late s tuners because of the vetical “Kluson Deluxe” stamping.

Again here’s the patent file of John E. Kluson dating April 10, showing the tuners: The tuners used before can be distinguished easily – they had thick cog wheels screwed to a 7/32″ string post. The plate had an outline and at the back there was a Kluson stamp.

I have seen four A stamps on Natural finished bodies, and a trans-red with an A stamp. I’ve seen a C on a Monaco Yellow and a Sunburst. I have also seen a D, along with an A on a Sunburst body. This is just a theory, but if only A’s were put on Natural finished guitars as an example, it could help determine if a guitar is refinished. The number will have an ‘S’ prefix possibly an ‘E’, read below followed by a six digit number.

The first digit is supposed to reflect the year of manufacture, but there are major overlaps in this regard, and the serial number should not be used to ID a guitar’s exact year of manufacture. The last five digits are basically random. An important thing to look for are the matching serial number stickers in the neck pocket and on the pickguard. All bodies are Ash, and usually a heavy piece.

And most of all, there is a detail we have never encountered on a Country Club: The sound post connects top and back, giving the guitar a greater rigidity, to avoid feedback problems when played really loud.
